Italy Vacation, Part 7 - Sienna

5/15/15

Short post today.  We left early in the morning for a day trip to Sienna, which was a pretty happening place before the plague smacked it down all fierce-like.  Sienna is the home to the Palio di Siena, which is a horse race that pits different areas of the city, denoted by mascots(dragons, owls, porcupines, unicorns, etc.), against each other in a no holds barred slugfest around the main plaza, Piazza del Campo.  Looks awesome, but we sadly missed it as it only runs twice per year.  We checked out some churches and crypts as well, but the rain kept us from enjoying everything to its fullest extent.

The entire city is pretty much a massive hill.

A brief break from the rain allowed us to grab a picture outside of
the Duomo di Siena.
Getcha some.
After returning from Siena, we had some time to burn before dinner.  I elected to nap. Allison went shopping and returned with a small painting.  Or so I thought.  It was actually a stone mosaic which was crafted so precisely that you can't even tell that it is made of separate pieces.  Pretty cool.  It currently resides in our bedroom in Little Rock.

Dinner tonight was a special treat for Allison, as her host family from Novi Ligure made the trip down to Florence to meet us for dinner.  Dad was warned that this would be a typical Italian dinner that would last a good 3+ hours, but he elected not to believe us.  I guess he got the picture when we didn't receive our deserts until past 11:00.  Dinner was excellent and Allison was very excited to see her host family, the Lorenzis, who I skied the Dolemites with a day after Allison and I got engaged at the Strasbourg winter festival in 2011.  The next day would be our last in Florence, as we had an afternoon train to our final destination, Venice.
Team Anthony with the Lorenzis.
