Croatia Vacation - Peljesac Peninsula

 9/1/22

We woke up early to snag a ferry over to Orebic on the mainland to meet our tour guide provided by D'Vino Wine Bar out of Dubrovnik.  We had originally planned to visit 3 wineries/vineyards and make a stop in Ston to go out in a little boat and harvest our own oysters, but severe thunderstorms forced us to drop the oyster excursion.  Oh well, you win some and you lose some.

Our first stop was to Korta Katarina, a newer winery overlooking the sea right on the outskirts of Orebic.

We tried three wines here and, as was the case for most of the day, they were not skimpy with the pour sizes.  We tried three wines here and the white was my favorite.  The two reds were a bit dry for my taste.  I tried to show off the "mouth tornado" version of tasting that we were taught in Bordeaux, but I sucked in too hard and almost choked.

Next, we traveled southeast to Potomje to sample wine from Boris Violic.  This was a smaller, more rustic operation than Korta Katarina, but the wine was quite good.  About halfway through the tasting, the promised thunderstorm finally decided to show up and we were almost washed away on our sprint back to the van.  Our final winery stop was right down the road at Matkovic Wines.  I think Allison bought a couple of bottles from here, but by this point I had a nice little buzz going so I can't tell you for sure.  Our driver dropped us off to meet our boat in Trstenik, but not before grabbing a late lunch at Vitaceae, a nice little spot right next to the water.

After refueling at lunch, I went to take a nap while Allison and some of the others made a hike up to the nearby Grgic Vina, which is run by winemaker Mike Grgich, known for creating one of the wines that won the 1976 Paris Wine Tasting and turned Napa Valley into a world renowned wine destination.
